Using Technology to Be More Human

When I started my work here at Bethel University, I stepped out of teaching in a 200-seat auditorium into the world of online learning.  I had taught online classes before, but they were more of the “correspondence course” ilk.  I had taught large numbers of students in a lecture hall where grading was based on mid-terms and finals.  Bethel felt different.  Bethel IS different. 2020 Vision

As a teacher of Orientation classes at Bethel University, I tell my students I know exactly what they’re going through. I was once a student in the Success Program – scared to death about returning to college after an absence of more than 30 years. I was a new student in Bethel’s MBA Program – concerned that I wouldn’t have the time (or the intellect) to make it to the finish line. Having successfully overcome my own concerns, I assure students that it’s natural to be nervous. After all, returning to school takes time, money, focus and sacrifice. Stats isn’t so scary after all, at least according to Dr. Dani Babb!

One of the subjects that I teach at Bethel is Statistics – or as I hear my students say (relatively often!), “the dreaded stats”! Usually, by the end of the session, comments I hear are those of relief of course, and “wow, I just used this topic at work and made a better decision because of it” or “it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought.” So.. a few words on quantitative analysis and statistics.

Facilitator Spotlight: Charles Anderson: Not Just Teaching – Reaching

Bethel facilitator Charles Anderson believes in finding the good in every student. As he puts it, “If even one person believes in you, you can do almost anything.”

One of Anderson’s students, Amber Norwood, said it best in an email she recently sent to Bethel administrators:

“Mr. Charles Anderson not only taught us, but he really cared!
